Fitzhugh B Crews FIV Cat Sanctuary
PO Box 395  Cordova  TN  USA
email: fbcsanctuary@fivcatsanctuary.com

The Fitzhugh B. Crews FIV Cat Sanctuary is a 501C(3) organization dedicated to providing a loving home and life-long care for FIV+ cats. Due to the extreme difficulty in placing FIV+ cats, we accept cats from other rescues all over the United States. Your kind donations go a very long way toward the incredible cost of food, litter and medical care and enable us to continue to be the alternative to euthanasia for these wonderful and deserving animals.

FBC is the only rescue/sanctuary in the mid-south area that is FIV specific. Of the 50 cats currently residing in the sanctuary, 39 (including 3 that came to us as seven week old kittens) would have been euthanized had we not intervened. FIV+ cats can live for years without showing any symptoms. Almost all of the cats here are terrific pets and are available for adoption and our goal is to provide them with a safe and comfortable place to stay while they are waiting for their forever family to find them.

FIV or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus is an incurable virus that causes the immune system of infected cats to be compromised. It is most commonly transmitted through blood contamination from deep, penetrating bite wounds. Even though FIV and HIV are very closely related, humans are NOT at risk for contracting the virus from an infected cat. ***********FIV CAN ONLY BE SPREAD BETWEEN CATS************* Unaltered, outdoor cats of breeding age are at the greatest risk for infection. Kittens can test positive for the virus due to antibodies from an FIV+ mother but only a small percentage are really infected. There is a vaccine available to prevent this horrible disease, Unfortunantly, it is only effective against less than half of the strains of the virus. Also, a vaccinated cat will test positive for the virus just because it is vaccinated. This means that if a vaccinated cat should stray from home and end up in a shelter, it will likely be euthanized as being FIV positive. The best way to prevent the spread of FIV is to spay and neuter your pet and keep it indoors.
