Located in the Southwestern corner of North Carolina, Catman 2 is a private, limited admission, no-kill shelter that houses as many as 60 cats. Working quietly within the adult feline population, 68 year old retired Professor Harold Sims invests his time and patience in socializing the older ones. Thanks to his efforts and the help of his wife Kay and an occasional volunteer over 1,200 cats have been placed for adoption in the past 6 years! Licensed by the state of North Carolina, Catman-2 is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization that will rescue older cats who are housed in government funded animal shelters or other humane societies where they are living on borrowed time.

Brought to Catman-2 the cats are vetted and tested for most of the standard diseases. Harold only charges $60.00 to adopt out his cats, and that cost does not even cover the standard vet bill. Some cats arrive at the shelter with their vet needs already provided, and those who arrive that need more extensive exams, Harold will try to provide that, but he is dependent on the kindness of people who donate in order to meet all the needs. The cats are tested for feline leukemia, parasites and other illnesses. Necessary treatments are administered and all are given age-appropriate vaccinations, and they are spayed or neutered. Kittens or cats that are adopted out quickly come with a prepaid voucher to cover the required vet procedures at the proper time.

Dr. Sims says "This is my vice, I do not smoke, drink, go to the Country Club or eat at fancy restaurants. I have driven the same car for ten years. I am not in this for the money, It is a calling and sometimes I wish I had ear plugs! This is very depressing work, because there are so many, and we can't reach them all. I now work harder than when I taught Junior College Ecology. I feel like the Dutch boy with his finger in the dike. The flood keeps coming no matter what I do."
